Stone-Coated Steel Roofing

Stone-coated steel gives you a metal roof that does not read as metal from the street. Panels are pressed into a shingle, shake, or tile shape and surfaced with stone granules.

What this material is

A coated steel panel is stamped into profile, then finished with an adhered layer of stone granules. The result is a metal system with a textured, matte surface rather than the sheen of a painted panel.

Properties and applications it may suit

  • Homes where the owner wants a metal system with a traditional appearance
  • Neighborhoods where a bare metal panel would look out of place
  • Structures that cannot carry the weight of concrete or clay tile but want a similar profile
  • Roofs where the pitch and framing suit the system, which we verify on site

Appearance and customization

  • Shingle, shake, and tile profiles depending on the product selected
  • Matte, granulated texture rather than a painted metal sheen
  • Color is in the granule layer, so the surface reads closer to asphalt or tile than to steel
  • Hip, ridge, and trim pieces are supplied as part of the system

Installation considerations

  • Installation follows the panel manufacturer's method, which differs from both shingle and standard metal roofing
  • Attachment may be to battens or directly to decking depending on the system
  • Layout, overlap, and trim details are specific to the product and are not interchangeable between systems
  • We review the deck and framing before recommending a panel system

Maintenance considerations

  • Keep valleys and gutters clear so granules and debris are not held on the roof
  • Avoid foot traffic on the panels; ask us to inspect after a storm
  • Have penetrations, trims, and roof-to-wall details checked periodically
  • Report any dented or displaced panel promptly so it can be addressed

Common questions

Is stone-coated steel noisy in rain?
It sits over decking with underlayment beneath it, and the granulated surface is not a bare metal panel, so it does not behave like an uninsulated barn roof. What you hear in a given home depends on the decking, attic, and insulation.
How is it different from a standing seam roof?
Both are metal. Standing seam uses long panels with concealed seams and a modern look. Stone-coated steel uses shorter formed panels with a granulated, traditional appearance, and it installs differently.
Does the visualizer show stone-coated steel?
No. The roof visualizer currently supports asphalt shingle product lines only. We will show you physical samples for stone-coated steel.
