Exposed-Fastener Metal Panels: R-Panel, U-Panel, and 5V-Crimp
Exposed-fastener panels are fastened through the face of the panel, with the screw head and its gasket visible on the surface. They are common on shops, barns, outbuildings, and some homes across rural North Texas.

What this material is
These are roll-formed coated steel panels in a repeating rib profile. R-Panel has wide, squared ribs. U-Panel has a rounded rib. 5V-Crimp uses five V-shaped crimps across the panel for a traditional look. Metal gauge, coating, and panel length vary by the system selected.
Properties and applications it may suit
- Shops, barns, equipment buildings, and covered structures
- Homes where the owner wants a metal roof and an exposed-fastener look is acceptable
- Additions, porches, and outbuildings that should match an existing metal roof
- Roofs where pitch, framing, and substrate suit the profile, which we confirm on site
Appearance and customization
- R-Panel reads as bold, widely spaced ribs
- U-Panel reads softer, with rounded repeating ribs
- 5V-Crimp has a traditional, narrow-crimp profile often chosen on farmhouses and porches
- Fastener heads are visible in the field, in rows that follow the panel layout
Installation considerations
- Fastener placement, spacing, and torque matter; overdriven or underdriven screws are a common source of leaks later
- Panel profile, gauge, finish, and attachment method depend on the system selected and the structure underneath
- Substrate matters: purlins, battens, and solid decking each call for different attachment
- Ridge, eave, rake, and penetration trims are part of the system and are installed with it
Maintenance considerations
- Fastener gaskets are the wear point on this style of roof and should be checked periodically
- Watch for backed-out screws, especially on long runs and after high wind
- Keep debris from collecting in the panel valleys and at roof-to-wall transitions
- Have any scratched or cut edge looked at, since exposed metal edges weather differently
Common questions
- Which profile should I choose?
- It depends on the building, the look you want, and what the structure underneath supports. R-Panel is common on shops and barns, U-Panel is a softer profile, and 5V-Crimp suits a traditional look. We go over the tradeoffs during the inspection.
- Do exposed fasteners leak?
- They do not leak when installed correctly, but the gaskets under the screw heads are the part of the roof that needs attention over time. That is the main practical difference from standing seam.
- Can an exposed-fastener roof go over my existing roof?
- Sometimes, depending on the structure, the substrate, and the condition of what is already there. We look at it before answering, because going over a failing roof hides problems rather than solving them.
