How a Roof Insurance Claim Actually Works

Duane Sparks July 5, 2026 · Updated October 7, 2026 7 min read

Most homeowners only file a roof claim once or twice in their lives, so the process feels foreign. It doesn't have to. Here's what it looks like when we walk it with you.

Before you call your carrier

If water is entering the home, protect people and belongings first and take reasonable steps to limit further damage. Take dated photos of what you can see safely from the ground and inside the house. Write down when you noticed the damage. If you are unsure whether the roof was damaged at all, a documented inspection can help you decide whether contacting your carrier makes sense. Your policy and your carrier set the rules for reporting, so review your policy or ask your agent about deadlines.

1. The honest inspection

We document visible conditions with photos and explain what we found. Whether damage is covered is decided by your insurance carrier under your policy. If we don't find storm damage, we'll tell you. We never push a claim just to create a job.

2. Filing and the adjuster meeting

If you choose to file, your carrier assigns an adjuster. The adjuster works for the carrier, inspects the property, and prepares the carrier's estimate. At your request, we can meet the adjuster on site to point out our documented findings. The adjuster and your carrier make the coverage decision.

When filing may not make sense

Not every roof problem is storm damage. Wear from age, installation problems, or a single small repair that costs less than your deductible may not be a good reason to file. If our inspection does not find storm damage, we will tell you. The decision to file is always yours, and questions about what your policy covers belong with your carrier or agent.

3. Scope review and build

After the carrier issues its estimate, we compare it with our construction scope. If additional work is found during construction, we document it and, when you authorize it, submit construction-related documentation to your carrier for review. The carrier decides what is covered. JF Roofing does not act as a public adjuster, interpret coverage, or negotiate claim settlements. Then we schedule the build, protect your property, and complete the work.

4. Final walkthrough

We clean up, magnet-sweep for nails, and walk the finished roof with you before we submit final paperwork to your carrier. You pay your deductible, with nothing hidden.

About your deductible

Your deductible is your responsibility under your policy. JF Roofing never waives, pays, or offsets a homeowner's deductible. Be cautious of anyone who offers to.

What JF Roofing does and does not do

We document roof conditions with photos, explain what we found in plain language, and complete the roofing work you authorize. JF Roofing does not determine coverage, interpret your policy, negotiate claim settlements, or act as a public adjuster. If you have questions about a free inspection, call (817) 886-8080. Our office is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and emergency calls are answered 24/7.
