Choosing the Right Shingle for Your Texas Home
Not every roof needs the most expensive shingle on the shelf, but in hail country the cheapest option is rarely the best value. Here is how the three common asphalt shingle types compare.
Three-tab shingles
Three-tab shingles are a flat, single-layer design. They are lighter and usually less expensive up front, but they have a simpler look and are less common on new residential roofs today. Wind and warranty terms depend on the specific product, so compare the manufacturer's published details for any shingle you are considering.
Architectural shingles
Architectural (also called dimensional or laminated) shingles are the standard for most DFW homes. They are thicker than three-tab, have a dimensional look that suits nearly every roofline, and come in the widest range of colors. Ratings and warranties vary by manufacturer and product line.
Impact-resistant (Class 3 and Class 4) shingles
Some shingles are tested to a Class 3 or Class 4 impact rating. A rating belongs to the specific tested product, not to every shingle that looks similar, and no shingle is hailproof. Some insurers offer a discount for impact-rated roofs, but that depends on your carrier and policy, so ask your insurer directly before counting on it.
Warranties matter
Manufacturer warranties depend on the manufacturer's terms, and many require the system to be installed to specification, including underlayment, ventilation, and flashing. That is why we install complete systems rather than mixing and matching. Our workmanship warranty on a roof replacement is 5 years.
